New Year's Trash in Jakarta Reaches 327 Tons

"The garbage collected on the eve of New Year's Eve is 327 tons. This number has dropped from the previous year which reached 780 tons. At 04.00 WIB, the capital has returned clean," said Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Service, Isnawa Adji, through his written statement Tuesday (1/1/2019).
Isnawa said the decline in the amount of garbage was caused by the decline in rain, which prevented people from celebrating the turn of the year outside their homes. In addition, most residents obeyed the Jakarta Provincial Government's invitation to celebrate the changing of the year simply as a form of empathy for disaster victims in several regions.
The garbage is collected from 45 tons of Monas Area, 22 tons of HI Roundabout, and 26 tons of Jl Jenderal Sudirman-Jl MH Thamrin.
Isnawa directs the cleaning process at Jalan Sudirman-Thamrin, Bundaran HI, Monas Area, Jalan Gajah Mada-Hayam Wuruk, Kota Tua, and Statue of Tani.
"We also assigned all Head of Sub-dept., Head of Division, even the head and deputy head of service, to go directly to the field. Previously, we monitored all the crowds in Jakarta. Once the program was over and the mass melted, the cleaning process began immediately," said Isnawa
The cleaning process can be carried out quickly because the officers and the community have distributed 10,000 garbage bags to street vendors. In addition, thousands of dust bin are placed in crowded spots.
"We appreciate the concern of residents who have put garbage in their place. It really helps the officers. As for road cleaning, we deploy 50 units of road sweeper. Cleaning is also fast," he said.
